Israeli Refusal

"We don't have any intention to apologize. We think that the opposite is true," Lieberman – Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs – said in Latvia. "We have no plans to do that, and the minister did not promise anything to that regard during his meeting with the Turkish foreign minister two days ago," Trade and Labor Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer's bureau added making this official: Israel wouldn’t apologize for the crimes it committed against Gaza’s Freedom Flotilla.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has explained regarding the Turkish request for a formal apology from Israel: "We showed them an exit road. If they apologize as a result of their own investigation's conclusion, that would be fine for us. But of course we first have to see it," and "They are aware of our demands. If they do not want to apologize, then they should accept an international investigation." The Israeli refusal brought a clear answer: "If steps are not taken, the process of isolation will continue."

The steps Turkey took are strong: it recalled its ambassador to Israel and closed its airspace to Israeli military aircraft. It had also stated that the diplomatic relations between the countries would be severed if Israel would not apologize.

Do these actions carry any weight? Can Netanyahu sleep at night?

Strategic Issues

How come Israel and Turkey did develop such deep military relations? Simply, there are strategic advantages to such relations. Israel suffers of a major drawback: a single border line with its enemies. In The Cross of Bethlehem I commented about my having been an officer at a vertical bypass division aimed at landing beyond the enemy’s lines. The unit is aimed at opening a second front against Syrian and Egyptian units. The deployment of the unit is complex. A simpler option is getting access to the Syrian backlines through Turkey. That was Israel’s motivation for this unholy alliance.

Turkey had similar motivations. In 1938, Hatay became independent from the French mandate of Syria as the Republic of Hatay. Following a referendum, 8 months later in 1939, it decided to join Turkey. This self-annexation was never recognized by Syria, which continues to show Hatay as part of its territory on maps. Moreover, Syria supports supporting the PKK struggle in eastern Turkey. By making an alliance with Israel, Turkey opens a second front against Syria, which would became strategically important if the conflict becomes violent. This is the “alliance with the next-closest country” approach; it can be seen in other areas of conflict.

Is Netanyahu sleeping at night?

So, is Netanyahu sleeping at night? Israel won’t apologize, effectively destroying its most important alliance in the Middle East. Apologizing would mean recognition of more than sixty years of evil committed by the State of Israel and of three-thousand years of the same attitude by the Jewish people. Jesus did summarize this well in Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves (and to my Zionist-Christian readers I strongly recommend reading the whole of Matthew 23 before they go on blaspheming God by supporting the terrorist State of Israel).

In a multi-polar world, there is a noticeable increase in the importance of diplomacy. Turkey is showing this. There is more. The Arab League will turn to the United Nations Security Council to declare an independent Palestinian state if peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians do not bear fruit by September, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit told the Egyptian daily al-Masry al-Youm on Saturday, July 3, 2010. The Arab League decision was based on UNSC Resolution 1515, which calls for regional Middle East peace, based on the two-state solution.

These two apparently independent events are converging toward a reality in which Israel would be internationally isolated and a Palestinian State declared in the near future.
