Father Forgive Them

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. We'll return to this verse at the end. Before Easter I would like to speak about forgiveness. Even in the Old Testament we can see that forgiveness is the result of repentance. Let's see a few texts: Isaiah
55:6 Seek ye the LORD while he may
be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Jeremiah
3:12 Go and proclaim these words
toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the
LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am
merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever. Ezekiel 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Zechariah 1:2 The LORD hath been sore
displeased with your fathers. There are many similar texts, God promises pardon to those who repent and turn back to Him. In the New Testament, God promises the same: Matthew 3:1 In those days came John the
Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matthew
11:20 Then began he to upbraid the
cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they
repented not: In this last text Jesus is clear, there is no pardon without repentance. Also: Matthew 12:41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. However, if the condition is fulfilled, pardon is granted: Luke
15:7 I say unto you, that likewise
joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over
ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Jesus even pardoned Peter after the last denied Him three times: John
21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus
saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than
these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He
saith unto him, Feed my lambs. What happens if there is no repentance? Matthew 18:15 Moreover if thy brother
shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and
him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally
yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness
with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 1 Corinthians 5:12 For what have
I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that
are within? The texts are clear. The unrepentant sinner distances himself from the Body of the Church and we must keet distance from him. It is not for us to judge him - and thus we cannot pardon - only God can judge such a sinner. And the result is obviously condemnation. In the future the situation would be different: Corinthians 6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? Matthew 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Until then we'll wait patiently and faithfully. Now, the verse we began with looks very different: Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. Jesus says God will judge the sinners that crucified Him. Jesus had all the authority for pardoning - he did that all the time - yet here he does not. Why? They did not repent. They told jokes on Him. They kept harming His body until He died. They did not fulfill the condition for being pardoned. I want to return to what we have seen in Gaza. I read the Hebrew transcript of the assassin-soldiers talks in Beit Oranim. They tell about the assassination of innocents. Snipers assassinating from far away old women, mothers and children. The soldiers are not repentant, they tell jokes and make funny commentaries, and do that openly to the Israeli media. Doing so, they have grown apart from God, if they ever were close to Him. Father, forgive them, because we cannot do so.
