The Day before Palestine: Israel Tests Antimissile

A couple of months ago, during the Jewish New Year, it became clear that Palestine would ask to be accepted as an observer state at the UN General Assembly. The vote is expected to take place tomorrow, November 29, the same day as the historic 1947 vote on UN Resolution 181, better known as the UN Partition Plan of Palestine. As analyzed in November 29, UN Decides on Palestine, if accepted, Palestine will have the same status held by the Holy See, Vatican City. This will upgrade Palestine’s status from Occupied Territory to Occupied Country, opening new options for a legal battle against the Israeli occupation. The day before the historic event, Israel gave up its diplomatic efforts. Hebrew media already conceded defeat after several European countries announced that they would support the Palestinian petition; among them only Germany and the Czech Republic firmly support Israel. France was the first to announce its support for Palestine. Spain, Norway, Denmark, and Switzerland followed France. All of Asia is expected to support Palestine. Africa will also support Palestine, though Israel is emphasizing that Togo, Malawi and Cameroon will oppose. Most of the American continent will also support Palestine, with the exception of the USA, Canada and Guatemala. Micronesia, which enjoys Israeli support for years on security issues, will also support Israel. Thus, if nothing unexpected happens, today is the Day Before Palestine, which will be accepted in a landslide vote.

IDF Preparations

The Israeli assessment of the issue is so clear, that the IDF Central Command in Jerusalem (do not confound this with its General Headquarters), which controls the West Bank, has already announced that it is preparing for violence. It announced that tomorrow it will deploy soldiers in areas where encounters between Palestinians and settlers may take place. Israel's Ministry of Defense expanded on that, saying that if Palesine is accepted by the UN, supporting parades are expected in all Palestinian cities. These are expected to reach the town's edges and in some cases approach Jewish settlements in the vicinity. Thus, the IDF will deploy special scattering means, among them "bo'ash" a device from which an insufferable stench emanates, "mataziot" trucks which throw water, and "tze'aka," a loudspeaker attached to jeeps which creates painful noise. Deployed soldiers will carry fire arms. The IDF is expecting violence.

However, that wasn't all. In the Day Before Palestine, Israel tested successfully the first complete prototype of its Magic Wand antimissile system. Coincidence is not probable; this was a warning to Palestine.

Israeli Antimissiles

The antimissile weapons (I don't include here anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles that are also being developed by RAFAEL and others) are divided into three categories as per their interception range. The Iron Dome system is the best known due to its role in the recent Operation Pillar of Cloud; it is intended to intercept short-range rockets (0–70km). The Magic Wand system (in English it is often called David's Sling) is designed to intercept medium- and long-range rockets, meaning between 70km and 250km while the Arrow is designed to intercept ballistic missiles from up to 500km. As explained in the article linked in this paragraph, Israel carefully manipulates the interception statistics of this system in order to market them better to potential customers and to get more financial help for their development from the USA.

An often overlooked fact is that antimissiles can be used also as offensive weapons. Through the magic of fine-print manipulation, governments often succeed in selling us lies; Iron Dome is a classic example of that. There are two points to pay attention to in the material published by Israel on this weapon. First, it is designed to intercept short-range threats up to 70 kilometers in all-weather situations. Second, it is a mobile system, similar in size to most weapons used by artillery corps. This means it can be carried around by the artillery just behind the frontline, and neutralize missiles and artillery shells fired by the other side. Thus, strictly speaking, this is not a defensive weapon, but a frontline support-weapon as all artillery is. The reality is that the acquisition of Iron Dome by South Korea could have offensive implications towards North Korea, in the same way that its possession by Israel is a threat towards Palestine.

Understanding this, Israel's firing of its first fully operational Magic Wand on the Day Before Palestine looks like an open threat. This assessment is supported by the publicity of the event. Israel published a video through its main newspaper, Yedioth Aharonot, in which the missile interception test could be clearly seen, including its radar system. It can be seen below. Given the published characteristics of the system, it is mainly aimed to protect Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa from rockets like the Fajr-5 fired from Gaza to Tel Aviv, following the Israeli attack of November 14. "Homa" ("Defensive Wall"), the administrative body developing Magic Wand (it is part of Mapat, the Weapons and Infrastructures Development Administration of the Ministry of Defense), already announced that the system will be deployed in early 2014, and that it is working with Boeing in the development of a more advanced system.

In the Day Before Palestine, Israel announced the war of the day after.
